Meet John

Forager

I used to do a very odd thing when, nearly forty years ago, I began to take foraging very seriously. I would explain (sotto voce!) to an imaginary audience everything about the plant or fungus that I was collecting. Since those days I have taken perhaps 12,000 people on wild food adventures, sharing what I have learned over a lifetime.

Foraging is about much more than a free dinner. It is one of the fundamental instincts which kept our species and distant ancestors alive. Nature rewards us for following our instincts, so we feel a simple but intensely meditative joy in searching wood and field, shore and riverbank. It is a fulfilling pursuit because it is completely natural, something we are designed to do.

Foraging takes knowledge, dedication and an attention to the details of the natural world that we seldom attempt. Foragers see more. A sentiment I have heard a hundred times is, “A walk will never be the same again!”
